We had to first drive to Calais, cross the channel then all the way down to the south of Portugal to board the long ferry crossing to Madeira. It was a long drive! The Shogun and trailer look tiny on the ferry next to the ERC teams.
Queuing for the boat
The party boat cruise to the island.
The service area was on the top floor of the bus station. The recce was fraught as the Shogun didn't like the heat and kept going into "limp mode" and when it finally broke down the Police towed it away!
The event started with a super special around the streets of Funchal. The spectators were in carnival mood. The event is mainly run by women. It ran like clockwork.
Feeling the heat here on along stage. The car ran well also so the service crew fixed the Shogun for the 1660 mile trip home.
We had lots of attention as we were the only UK crew in an unusual sight on the island's roads. The roads were mainly well surfaced and the scenery on the island stunning.
Jumping for joy at the spectator arena.
Festival time in the villages. The event was fomally known as the Rally of the Flowers and we could see why.
Passing beautiful villas.
Start the climb to the clouds. We drove through them and came out the other side.
In the national park above the clouds. There were huge drops and endless twists and turns.
Coming down.
Funchal super special
Great viewing points. Most of the Island must have been out to watch in their localities.
Coming into land.
Champagne time, Big trophies and no time to hang about as we were on the return boat within 2 hours !
